Although rum was in vogue for the roaming pirates of the seven seas, this flag was not often seen (unless the captain's name was "Rum.") Workers in seventeenth-century sugar mills ground sugar cane and boiled the resulting juice until sugar and molasses were obtained. Rum was then distilled from the molasses.
