We have great pirate treasures: but if the truth be told, the subject has always been given far more words than it deserves, and if all the money that has been spent on treasure-hunting could be recovered, this would be the richest treasure of all. Very rarely individual pirates, through force of circumstance, buried their own shares, and not all of them were able to recover the loot. Such hoards would not have been very large. Buried treasure is usually associated with pirate captains, who drew larger shares; but this idea seems to be wrapped up with the false conception of the despotic captain.
